How to receive $16,000 per year for life

How would a permanent grant of $16,000 per year for life change the way you think about your future? Would you use it to pay down debt, fund your retirement account, start a business? At the core of my congressional campaign is the idea that you know better what to do with this money than the government does. Our government currently spends $4 trillion per year on welfare and entitlement programs, and I think that we would all be better off handing this money back to the people. If we divide it up equally amongst citizens 21 and older, we could each have $16,000 per year and still save money over the long term as compared to the existing system, because this is money that we are already spending.

The money would consist of $1000 per month as a direct deposit into each individual’s bank account and $4000 per year as a health insurance voucher to be used on the private market. 

Some people would call this a universal basic income. Others would call it a permanent tax cut. The key is that we should distribute this money equally to everyone, without any restrictions. The people who would benefit the most would be young people and working families, who currently don’t receive much from the existing system. Because this money would go to every individual, a couple would receive $2000 per month as a direct deposit and $8000 per year as a health insurance voucher. Such a change will transform the lives of working families.

To protect the retirement income of anyone 37 and older, we would offer them the opportunity to switch to the $16,000 per year or keep their existing package of Social Security and Medicare according to the current rules. We could similarly phase out other existing programs through attrition. People could choose to keep their existing benefits such as Food Stamps or Medicaid until they are no longer eligible, or they could switch to the $16,000 per year.
